Our History

Miroma was founded in 1984 by a group of passionate local parents, who saw a need for a community based support service for people living with disability across the region.

Initially opening its doors as Miroma Cottage in a residential home in Acacia Street, Mount Gambier in September 1985, the parents were supported by the Pastoral Council of the Catholic Church, which sponsored Miroma Cottage for a Federal Government grant.

Receiving a $10,000 grant per annum for three years, the parents aimed to create a facility that was heavily embedded in the local community and broke away from the institutionalised type respite care previously provided by other South Australian agencies.

The parent’s based the respite care provided by Miroma Cottage on Kolbe Cottage in Plympton, Adelaide and it was decided the facility would be based on a House Mother or House Father living in a normal home.

Since its initial beginnings, Miroma Cottage, now Miroma Inc., has moved to a larger residential home in Yeates Street, Mount Gambier and in 2016 purchased a second property in Yeates Street named Maruwa.

In 2019, Miroma was awarded the The Most Outstanding Disability Support Team in Australasia at the Enablement Awards in Melbourne.

Miroma has continued to diversify its services, expanding to include home support, programs catered to the needs of individual participants to help build confidence and skills.
